Kraftwerksstandorte Frimmersdorf und Neurath
As part of the end of lignite-fired power generation in 2030, the existing power plant sites in Frimmersdorf and Neurath will be transferred to another use.
The Frimmersdorf power plant was taken off the grid in 2017 and was transferred to the so-called security standby and shut down. The era of lignite-fired power generation in Frimmersdorf ended on September 30, 2021. In 2022, a multi-stage workshop process was launched to determine the future use of the power plant site and the old turbine hall in particular.
The power plant areas are to be used as a future location for research, development and marketing of information technologies as well as for digital and innovative businesses. In addition, central buildings are to be preserved as architectural monuments and become part of a heritage trail. Outline planning for the site was completed in 2024. The marketing of partial areas can be expected from 2026.
On 17.03.2022, the city of Grevenbroich and the municipality of Rommerskirchen agreed to collaborate with Perspektive.Struktur.Wandel GmbH (PSW) on the planning qualification of the Neurath power plant conversion site. The aim of the structural concept is to develop a functional and flexible spatial structure for the Neurath power plant site that enables the widest possible range of uses. It thus forms the basis for the strategic and long-term development of this large-scale site and creates a framework for exploiting the existing potential while taking new spatial qualities into account.
